I got to put in a couple hours on the wallhanging tonight, and am thrilled with the progress. D wanted to help, and turned out to be a fabulous assistant as my pattern mistress - got to the point where I could not keep her busy because she is so efficient! I was in charge of cutting, ironing, and sewing; she was in charge of keeping each section in place and getting it matched to the right color, and laying out the next piece to attach.
Blurry picture, but some of my tiny little trimmings - a lot of the paper-pieced sections are finished and needed to be trimmed to size:
The colors are so bright and set off really nicely against the gray. This is the last set of cross pieces being started:
Can't figure out how to rotate this picture, and my toes are in it. But there are a couple cross pieces in place so you can start to see the stars, and the fourth column is assembled:
My goal for tomorrow is to get all the cross pieces and the last column assembled, and then work on trimming the signed squares so we can decide where to put each one. My assistant is planning to return in the morning, so we might just meet that goal!

Oooooh, this is my favorite part of hand piecing - watching the design actually coming together! Great work by the assistant... Mom
